Christies

These days more and more people know someone who has been affected by cancer, perhaps personally, or through the experience of a loved one.

Fortunately we have the largest single site cancer research and treatment centre in Europe here in the UK, Christies.

Every year Christies is dedicated to treating more than 180,000 patients. Christies has a world wide reputation for excellence and with every year that passes, the percentage of people who are successfully treated increases.

Christies has been able to make that progress thanks to the help from people like you and we now have facilities to be proud of but we want to do better. Christies vision, and ours, is a future without cancer and the aim is to provide ever more affective treatments for the patients so their chances of surviving are greatly increased.

Here are a few facts and figures that might interest you:

Christies is one of the leading centres in the UK for clinical trials

Every year Christies has approximately:

  • 11,000 new patients
  • 15,000 in-patient stays
  • 14,500 day case stays
  • 139,500 out-patient attendances
  • Approximately 300 in-patient beds are used, with an average stay of less than 6 days
  • Christies is renowned for world class research both in the laboratories and with patients and provides education in aspects of cancer
  • Christies, the charity, raised over £5.6 million in 2002/03
  • One in three people will be diagnosed with cancer during their lifetime
  • It is estimated that around a third of all cases are caused by smoking and a third by diet
  • In 2000 more than 270,000 new cases of cancer were registered in the UK
  • There are over 200 different types of cancer but the four main types are lung, breast, prostate and colorectal
    • Men aged 20-39 - testicular most common
      children - leukemia most common
  • 65% of cases affect over 65’s

Christies has many ideas and projects that need to be developed with our help:

  • Short stay chemotherapy ward - to maximise this advance a short stay chemotherapy ward needs to be developed
  • Digital gamma camera and CT scanner system. Nuclear medicine imaging is at cutting edge of cancer diagnosis, treatment and research
  • Long term effects research. Researching ways to help patients avoid problems
  • Development in radio-immunotherapy. A way of producing ground breaking results. “Targeted therapy” works by enabling more specific areas to be targeted
  • New clinical trials research clinic. A research facility for over night clinical trials
